Figure 11: St Patrick’s Purgatory

c.1445-65:
St Patrick was best known in Europe for his association with St Patrick’s Purgatory. This illustration from the ‘Morgan-Mâcon’ Golden Legend (New York: Library, Morgan Library, M.672-5, II, fol.178v) is typical of European illustrations of the Donegal pilgrimage destination, showing the mouth of the cave with a (clearly fantastical) city behind . A brave pilgrim is shown entering the mouth of the cave with the blessing of the Saint.
