Figure 3: Seal of Glastonbury Abbey

13th century:
Seal of Glastonbury Abbey, now in the British Museum. This shows St Benen, St Patrick and St Dunstan. According to tradition St Patrick was the first Abbot of Glastonbury, and by the twelfth century pilgrims could visit ‘his tomb’ there. According to the tradition, he was succeeded as Abbot by his disciple, Benen. Dunstan, a tenth-century Abbot of Glastonbury, is credited with having instituted Benedictine rule there.
