History: ^
Provenance and history is closely connected with MS Salisbury Cathedral Library 221 (formerly Oxford Bodeleian Library Fell 4). The codex was still in Salisbury Cathedral in the middle of the 17th century (Ker, p. 97) but consequently passed over to the Bodeleian Library. Note from Dr. B. C. Barker-Benfield (Senior Assistant Librarian, Bodleian Library) of 3 March 2009: "... I must point out [...] that the Bodleian does not own the three-volume 12th-century set of Saints' Lives formerly shelfmarked MSS. Fell 3, 1 and 4. In 1985 all three volumes were returned permanently to Salisbury Cathedral Library, where they are shelfmarked MSS. 221, 222 and 223 respectively." For the circumstances surrounding this transfer, see Vaisey.
