Counter-Reformation images of St Patrick updated his vestments. This illustration – part of French artist Jacques Callot’s Les images des Saints, shows St Patrick, ‘Bishop of Ireland’, dressed in a capello romano, banishing snakes from the mouth of the cave at St Patrick’s Purgatory.
